The first El Clasico of the 2016-17 season ended in a 1-1 stalemate when a late Sergio Ramos goal helped Real Madrid share the honors after Luis Suarez fired the hosts into lead. The point helped Real maintain their six-point advantage at the top over their fierce rivals and keeps them unbeaten this season. For Barcelona, it’s a case of another missed chance to close the gap.

Real Madrid enjoyed a better start

Real started the game on the front foot and were the better side in the first-half. Barcelona looked tentative and their midfield in the absence of Andreas Iniesta looked very ordinary. Luka Modric ran the show from the midfield for Madrid and was at the centre of all their attacks.

Barcelona struggled to hold Madrid but luckily for them Cristiano Ronaldo was off-color. Karim Benzema too was distinctly missing from action where only a couple of half-chances fell to them and were not grabbed.

Barca came to life after the break

The hosts were a different side after the break as suddenly there was urgency in their play and purpose in their runs. It was not their finest display but somehow Luis Suarez found a way to open the scoring. Iniesta too was introduced marking his return from injury and suddenly the hosts were running the show from the midfield.

Sadly for the hosts, Lionel Messi was not his usual self and neither was Neymar. The Brazilian had a great chance to bury the match but his effort was curled over the bar. Same with Messi who would generally score from such efforts but missed a great chance to kill the contest.

Ramos punished Barca for their complacency

Ramos has made a name as the man for the big occasion and he lived up the expectations at Nou Camp yet again. His list of epic equalizers is already long and he added Barcelona to that with a stunning effort. Rising tall and high above the Barcelona defence from a Modric free-kick, Ramos headed with ease and precision to stun the home supporters.

There was enough time left for Barcelona to fluff another golden chance but overall it was a deserved result. Madrid showed that they are made of stern stuff and continue their unbeaten run while for Barca it is a cruel reminder of how far behind they are. The Catalans should have put the game to bed at various stages but missed the chance to do so. Luis Enrique will only pray that this doesn’t come back to haunt him at the end of the season!
