Man Utd 2016-2017 Staff Changes and transfers
The biggest change is at the top where Jose Mourinho joined as the manager. The Portuguese is not just one of the biggest names in the business, he’s also one of the most successful ones. Over the past few years, United have lost that aura of invincibility they built successfully under Sir Alex Ferguson. Teams no longer fear a visit to Old Trafford and this is exactly what Mourinho wants to rediscover. If any contemporary manager can do that, it’s him – which is why there is an air of excitement around the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
The biggest signing obviously is getting back Paul Pogba from Juventus. Of course it set them back by a record transfer amount but United is least bothered about the commercial hit. Pogba will give their defensive midfield an air of authority – something which they have been lacking ever since the retirement of Paul Scholes.
But the bigger impact will come from the enigmatic Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who’s joined the club as a free agent. A success wherever he played and a serial title-winner, the lanky striker is exactly what United need at the moment. One of the biggest characters of the modern game, Ibrahimovic’s presence would be a massive boost to the likes of Marcus Rashford. Can he be a Cantona to Mourinho? Only time will tell but the Swede looks the real deal.
Then of course are the signings of winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan and defender Eric Bailly. Both have the capability of holding their own in the first team which augurs well for Mourinho.
The season prediction Prediction
The biggest change that Mourinho has brought is already evident in the signings. One complaint of Van Gaal was that his side was too soft-centered. The presence of Mkhitaryan will give a direct threat to United far more than what it was in the last couple of years.
There is silent optimism at Old Trafford that this side with Mourinho at the saddle is capable of winning the title. Title may be slightly out of reach but this side could be in the mix and should finish in the top three. Anything less and it would be considered a huge disappointment.
Manchester United Key players
All eyes will be on Pogba and Ibra but keep an eye on Wayne Rooney and Ander Herrera. These are two players who are trying hard to justify their places in the starting XI. Both have a massive year ahead to prove their worth to the new manager. It’s boom or bust for both which makes it all the more interesting!
