EPL Season 2016 - 2017 - Week xvi Review

Written by

English Premier League is bracing up to the festive season with some midweek clashes. We go straight into the action review.

Everton 2 – 1 Arsenal

Arsenal missed their chance to go top of the table as Everton came from behind to secure a 2-1 win. For Ronald Koeman’s side, this is their first victory since October and a much needed one! Alexis Sanchez gave the Gunners an early lead but Seamus Coleman and Ashley Williams gave the Toffees a crucial win. Phil Jagielka was sent off in the dying minutes but the hosts held on.

Chelsea produced evidence of why they are strong candidates to be Champions this season when they capped a brilliant comeback to defeat direct rivals Manchester City 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Gary Cahill’s own goal gave the hosts an advantage in this crucial clash but goals from Diego Costa, Willian and Eden Hazard shocked the home supporters into silence.

MAcn City v Chelsea and End-to-end action game

Antonio Conte recalled Cesc Fabregas to the line-up as Chelsea tried to cement their spot at the top of the Premier League. The match started on expected lines as end-to-end action saw both sides keep the spectators on the edge of the seat. There were chances at both ends as the two title hopefuls gave glimpses of their attacking intent which took them to the top of the league.

But it was an own goal that opened the scoring. A Jesus Navas cross was acrobatically volleyed into the net by Cahill – a wonderful goal in a wrong net. It was a cruel end to the first half but that was just the beginning of things for the Blues.

A transformed second half!

Chelsea came quick off the blocks after the break and it was that magical Fabregas-Costa combination that brought them back on level terms. Starting a match for just the second time this season, the Spaniard played a stunning long ball helping Costa score his 11th goal of the campaign.

City tried to restore their lead but the midfield of Chelsea is one of the best this season. The frustrations of the home side got bigger when the Blues went ahead 20 minutes from time through a counter-attack. Willian – who replaced Pedro – scored a beautiful goal to put the visitors into lead.

A fiery end to a great match

Hazard added gloss to the score line for the Blues as he scored from another counter attack to put the game beyond City. There were dramatic scenes to end the fiery contest though as a high lunge from Sergio Aguero on David Luiz was bad enough to get him a red card. That resulted in an ugly skirmish which saw Fernandinho get a red card too.

The reactions from City were probably from a tackle earlier in the game from Luiz on Aguero but that incident shouldn’t take anything away from what was a wonderful game from the Blues. It’s still early days but on current form – against Tottenham and now against City – they look Champion material!

EPL Season 2016 - 2017 - Week XIIII Review

Written by

What a weekend we had in English Premier League – tight games, touch matches, late goals, dropped points…there was so much action everywhere. We look back at what transpired on Matchday 14.

Manchester City 1 – 3 Chelsea

In a clash of the top, Chelsea underlined its growing ascendancy by condemning Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to a 3-1 loss at home. It was a feisty encounter which ended with City receiving two red cards – Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho. The Blues now look huge favorites to win the title while City have a lot to look at.

The first El Clasico of the 2016-17 season ended in a 1-1 stalemate when a late Sergio Ramos goal helped Real Madrid share the honors after Luis Suarez fired the hosts into lead. The point helped Real maintain their six-point advantage at the top over their fierce rivals and keeps them unbeaten this season. For Barcelona, it’s a case of another missed chance to close the gap.

Real Madrid enjoyed a better start

Real started the game on the front foot and were the better side in the first-half. Barcelona looked tentative and their midfield in the absence of Andreas Iniesta looked very ordinary. Luka Modric ran the show from the midfield for Madrid and was at the centre of all their attacks.
