Who said low scoring matches can’t be entertaining! Switzerland and Albania played out a game decided by a single goal which was entertaining throughout. This Euro 2016 Group A fixture ended with Switzerland defeating Albania 1-0 with Fabian Schar scoring the winner.
An early goal and swift victory for Switzerland
It was just five minutes into the game that Switzerland went ahead after nodding home a corner from Xherdan Shaqiri. There were obvious question marks on the attempts of Etrit Berisha in the Albanian goal but the Swiss were too happy to accept the gift. Albania didn’t lie down though and pushed Yann Sommer into a couple of fine saves. But Albania’s task was further complicated when their captain Lorik Sana was given marching orders after a second bookable offence. The Albanians still had time and energy to push Sommer into a defining save that eventually proved vital in the final analysis.
The second half was on the same lines with Albania trying to play catch up with 10 men. Switzerland took control of the game and had many chances to put the result beyond doubt. Albania too had a couple of decent chances but Sommer in Switzerland goal stood like a rock and saved the day for them. In the end, it was a tense affair but the result was never in doubt for Switzerland.
Player of the Match - Switzerland vs Albania
New Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka was the star of the show for the Swiss winning the sibling battle with his brother Taulant who turned up for Albania. But the player of the day has to be Yann Sommer in the Swiss goal who made a string of wonderful saves. His collection from set pieces, distribution from the box and aerial collection were all exemplary. It was one of those days where he made no mistakes. In the end, Switzerland owed their full points to their goalkeeper.
