Euro 2016

Spain booked their place in the knockout stages of the Euro 2016 from Group D with an impressive display against Turkey. The 3-0 win puts Spain in pole position to capture the top spot from the top-of-the-table clash against Croatia while Turkey will need more than a mathematical miracle to shore up their chances.

The double defending Champions had to answer some awkward questions on the efficiency of their forwards after the first game. But any lingering doubts were put to bed with Alvaro Morata’s brace emphatically answering the critics. Morata and Nolito both scored before half-time to put Spain into advantage while a second goal by Morata shortly after the break fnished the job for Spain. There was no response from Turkey to the midfield sorcery of the Spaniards who continued their 62-year unbeaten run against Turkey.

Without a goal to boast after two games, Fatih Terim’s men are on the verge of an ignominious exit from the tournament. If against Croatia they appeared listless, against Spain they were left clueless. Their chances were few and far between and by the time they managed some tempo, it was all over. Their playmaker Arda Turan struggled to create any impact for the second game running and was even booed by his own supporters.

Del Bosque men have surely sent a strong message to all other contenders with this match. Though there still is some work to do, Spain will look to build up from this performance to mount a serious title defence.

Player of the game

Morata’s brace would have answered everyone’s questions as to why he was one of the most sought-after forwards of this generation. With an assured calmness, the Juventus forward is a rare combination of skill and finesse and would be the one to watch out for in the coming weeks.
