Wales showed how dangerous they can be when they crushed Russia 3-0 in their final group game to end up topping Group B ahead of England. Though they had substantial support from England who failed to break down Slovakia, Wales performed admirably to deserve the top spot.

There were very few doubts on Wales qualifying for the next round and even those few were quashed almost immediately. Wales started in a breathtaking fashion giving Russia no chance whatsoever in the game. It was thanks to Igor Akinfeev in the Russian goal that the margin was not more than the three it was. Aaron Ramsey was in inspired form and GarethBale troubled the Russian defence through the night with his pace. Within 20 minutes, Wales were 2-0 up with goals for Ramsey and Neil Taylor.

It took Wales deep into the second half to add another to their kitty but it was only a reflection of how good Akinfeev was. Nine shots on target in a dominating first half performance should be reason enough for every other side to fear Bale and his men. In the end, the result and top place were the ideal combo that Chris Coleman would have wished for and his charges delivered in the most glorious fashion.

Player of the game

For all the attention that Bale corners as the lynchpin, Ramsey slots silently behind as the creative engine. With opposition defence concentrating on Bale’s runs, Ramsey always slots in the space left behind to mastermind the attack. He was in full flow against Russia destroying them with a goal and an assist. A performance worth more than the man of the match for Aaron Ramsey!
