Slovakia was the more aggressive team in an otherwise dull first 20 minutes. Long range efforts from Hamsik and Jan Durica failed to ignite Sloakia while Russia were poor with their finishing. Just after the half-hour mark, Hamsik’s wonderful through ball set up Weiss who buried it low past Igor Akinfeev in the Russian goal.
Hamsik soon got his name on the scoring sheet with a lovely curling effort giving no chance for Akinfeev. Russia tried to get back in the second half with Denis Glushakov reducing the margin ten minutes from time. But Slovakia held on to win despite some late pressure from Russia.
Player of the game
Hamsik had a poor outing by his standards against Wales but was in full flow this match. He could have easily scored two more goals but his performance on the day was enough to pocket full points and bring his side back into contention.
