Euro 2016

Portugal became the first finalist of Euros 2016 when they defeated Wales 2-0 in the semi-finals. The match was closer as expected but Cristiano Ronaldo outshone his Real Madrid compatriot Gareth Bale to edge closer to assuaging the pain of 2004 Euros final loss to Greece.

It was always touted to be Ronaldo versus Bale but it was the Seleccao star who did the star turn. After an eventful first half where both sides were equally guilty of passing their chances to take lead, Ronaldo scored a bullet header in the 50th minute to put Portugal ahead. The goal was his ninth in European Championships equaling Michel Platini’s record.

The cagey affair soon sprung to life with Nani steering home another goal just three minutes later. Wales tried to come back but this was the night of Ronaldo and Portugal.

Portugal now await the winner of the other semi-final between France and Germany.

Portugal v Wales - Player of the game

Ronaldo always had to fight criticism of his inability to win games in national colors. But against Wales he looked a man on mission. His goal was an instant example of the poaching skills while the goal by Nani was opportunistic. Overall, Ronaldo made sure he won the duel and now stands just one win away from Euros glory.
