Euro 2016

Italy continued to confound critics in style, this time a 1-0 victory over Sweden clearing their passage to the round of 16. It required a late strike from Eder to put the match in Italy’s kitty, in a match that was pedestrian at best.

Antonio Conte’s men continue to build momentum to their tournament bid – something which the Italians are always known for. But this display against Sweden was in sharp contrast to the domination they showed against the much-fancied Belgium. All of the incisive passing that put them on top against Belgium was conspicuously missing in this match. Marco Parolo had a couple of golden chances for the Italians while it was left to Eder to dribble his way through a host of Swedish defenders and score the winner.

If Italy were poor, Sweden were worse and couldn’t even register a shot on target – two games in running in the Euros now. Zlatan Ibrahimovic missing from close range was the only highlight from the match. The loss comes on the heels of a disappointing opening game share of spoils against Northern Ireland. Sweden will now have to go all-out for a win in their final fixture to stay alive. Even if they miss out on a spot in the second round, there wouldn’t be many complaining!

Player of the game

There were many questions on the lack of fire power within the Italian ranks. Though Graziano Pelle did enough to quell those against Belgium – the incision from this team is always a doubt. Eder sprang a cool surprise for Conte by converting a typical chance and this should ease some of his concerns. Late goals are always a striker’s dream and Eder got one for his memoirs against Sweden.
