Euro 2016

In a sweet revenge for the last Euros’ finals defeat, Italy outclassed Spain 2-0 to end the Spaniards’ quest for a third consecutive continental crown. The win sets up a mouth-watering quarter-final between Italy and Germany.

Italy didn’t look the Italian sides of the past as they continuously marauded on the wings and looked the more potent attacking team. The match started under heavy rain but as the rain subsided, the Italians exerted their influence and took the lead through Giorgio Chiellini.

A long range effort was parried by David De Gea only to see Chiellini knock it in. Italy would have been 2-0 up before half-time had it not been for De Gea who made some spectacular saves. Spain tried to get back in the game but were always playing catch-up.

The fierce determination and intensity of the Italians made a difference to this game as the famed Spanish midfield was kept quiet. In the end, it looked like a real end to a Spanish era that has dominated World football in the past decade.

Italy vs Spain - Player of the game

Mattia de Sciglio was a terror on the flanks and a constant menace for the Spanish but the real star of the day was coach Antonio Conte. In what was supposed to be a tactical clash between these two sides, Conte came on top with his decisions. To play like an un-Italian side with this ageing squad is a credit in itself. Kudos to Conte!
