Euro 2016

Iceland continued to surprise everyone by dishing out another strong performance against Hungary in a Group F encounter in Euro 2016. But in the end, it was Hungary who were celebrating a point, following a very entertaining 1-1 draw.

Iceland were impressive against Portugal and showcased the same gritty defensive resolve against Hungary. Shortly before the break, Iceland were awarded a dubious penalty following a penalty box tussle. Gylfi Sigurdsson calmly slotted from the spot to send spectators dreaming of a first ever tournament victory. They dropped deeper in the second half to absorb the Hungarian pressure but an own goal by Birkir Saevarsson leveled the things up for Hungary. There was no time for any further drama as both sides picked up a point each.

Hungary pulled a little surprise of their own by beating Austria in the first match. Although they fell behind early in the second half, Hungary applied concerted pressure on the Iceland goal eventually resulting in an own goal by Saevarsson. Hungary now has four points and their final match against Portugal could decide the topper of this group.

Both teams impressed so far in the tournament but Hungary has four points in its kitty to show for its efforts. They will now need just one point to stay in the automatic qualification places. For Iceland, nothing’s lost as they get another chance at grabbing the knock-outs place.

Player of the game

Sigurdsson is one of those rare star players in this Iceland team. His calm authority on the ball was evident when he took the penalty and gave Iceland the lead. Late in the game and deep into injury time, he had a chance to win the game for them from a free kick but couldn’t do so. Irrespective of the result, Sigurdsson was the stand out player from both the sides.
