Germany wrapped up their passage to the knockouts as Group C winners after a comfortable 1-0 win over Northern Ireland. The lone goal of the game was scored by Mario Gomez. And there was good news for Northern Ireland too as Michael O’Neill’s side also confirmed their passage to the knockouts as one of the best third-placed teams.
Germany had an indifferent tournament so far – impressing in one while struggling in the other. They struggled to hit top gear against Northern Ireland despite dominating possession against the underdogs. Northern Ireland came to the game with the plan of stifling the World Champions and it almost backfired with them. Their goal keeper Michael McGovern was called into action several times before and after they gave away the goal. With no attacking intent from the side, the Irish couldn’t claim a goal or a point.
Northern Ireland had to wait until the result of Czech Republic and Turkey in which the latter emerged victorious which was good news for the Irish. They now wait to find out their next opponent but they have already made history.
Player of the game
O’Neill’s side came into this match with just one thing in mind – grab a draw and a point. They were not successful in that but the fact that they gave only a single goal was due to the performance of McGovern under the sticks. Making more than a handful of brilliant saves, he even upstaged the brilliant Joshua Kimmich who was vital for the Germans along with Gomez. But the day belonged to McGovern.
