Germany win 6-5 on penalties

Euro 2016

Germany created history by overcoming their jinx against Euros nemesis Italy after winnin a thrilling quarter-finals encounter 6-5 via penalty shootout. The game also made its way into the record books for the 18 penalties that were taken which is a record for most spot-kicks taken in Euros.

Germany started the game brightly but were guilty of matching the defensive organization of the Italians to nullify their midfield. It wasn’t until after the hour mark that Germany could get a lead through Mesut Ozil finishing a great move by Mario Gomex and Jonas Hector. But the joy was short-lived though, as a Jerome Boateng handball gave the Italians a lifeline penalty which was duly converted by Leonardo Bonucci. Both teams took no chances from then, taking the game to penalties.

It was a tense shootout with the usually clinical Germans missing three penalties but Italy failed to convert four of their own scripting their own downfall.

Germany will now await the winner of the last quarter-final between hosts France and surprise package Iceland in the semi-final.

Germany v Italy - Player of the Match

It was always billed a Manuel Neuer versus Gianluigi Buffon clash and lived fully to those expectations. Both keepers made some brilliant saves but the younger Neuer overshadowed Buffon with an assured display clinching the tie for the Germans. There were impressive performances elsewhere from Toni Kroos and Joshua Kimmich too but Neuer was the star of the day.
