Euro 2016

Belgium had to respond to critics after a lackluster start against Italy in Euro 2016 and they did it in fine style. The Red Devils eased past Republic of Ireland for their first win of the tournament in Group E.

Marc Wilmots’ side has been one of the favorites to lift the title heading into the finals but were brought down crashing to earth in a disappointing display against Italy. Against Ireland on Saturday, they dominated throughout although it wasn’t until the second half that they scored their first goal from Romelu Lukaku. The second goal from Axel Witsel and a third from Lukaku gave the Belgians a well-deserved victory. Credit to Wilmots because all the changes to the starting lineup were spot-on! This kind of performance emphasizes why they are one of the hot favorites for the title.

For Ireland, this is a disappointing result that leaves them rooted to the bottom with just one point from two matches. Belgium were determined to prove a point and ended up dishing a master class to the Irish. All is not lost as Republic of Ireland is still in with a chance of booking a place in the knock-outs.

These kind of performances prove Belgium’s credentials but there is no room for complacency ahead of their final group match.

Player of the game

The presence of Kevin De Bruyne in the lineup makes Belgium a formidable one as was evident against Republic of Ireland. De Bruyne was pulling the strings from the centre of the park and assisted the first goal by Lukaku. Not just the assist, De Bruyne was a threat for the Irish who had no answers to his creativity. Undoubtedly, the star of the day for Belgium.
