The first El Clasico of the 2016-17 season ended in a 1-1 stalemate when a late Sergio Ramos goal helped Real Madrid share the honors after Luis Suarez fired the hosts into lead. The point helped Real maintain their six-point advantage at the top over their fierce rivals and keeps them unbeaten this season. For Barcelona, it’s a case of another missed chance to close the gap.

Real Madrid enjoyed a better start

Real started the game on the front foot and were the better side in the first-half. Barcelona looked tentative and their midfield in the absence of Andreas Iniesta looked very ordinary. Luka Modric ran the show from the midfield for Madrid and was at the centre of all their attacks.

It was a great weekend for Real Madrid as they consolidated their lead at the top of the Spanish La Liga standings as their nearest competitors faltered. El Clasico ended in a draw leaving Madrid as the real winners while Sevilla and Atletico Madrid too dropped points gifting them a huge advantage. We look back at matchday 14 action.

Barcelona 1 – 1 Real Madrid

It was a cagey affair at the Nou Camp – a tale of two halves. First half was completely dominated by Real Madrid but remained goal less at the break. Second half started with Barcelona dominating the play and taking the lead through Louis Suarez. It looked to end that way until Sergio Ramos headed late in the half to earn the spoils. It was a well-deserved point for Madrid as they continue to hold their six pojnt advantage over Barcelona at the top of the standings. For the Catalans, it was a game of missed chances – one they may end up ruing at the end of the season.

Real Madrid increased their lead at the top of Spanish La Liga to six points while Barcelona continued to struggle. Sevilla showed once again that they are serious contenders to gatecrash the top three while Atletico Madrid are trying hard to stay relevant. We look back at some of the action from Spain.

Real Madrid 2 – 1 Sporting Gijon

Real Madrid rode on a brilliant brace from Cristiano Ronaldo but the hosts needed some luck to overcome the gritty visitors. Ronaldo opened the scoring from a penalty and then doubled the lead. Carlos Carmona pulled one back for Sporting who had a golden chance to level things late in the second half. But Duje Cop missed a penalty with 13 minutes left in the game and Madrid had a narrow escape. The win boosts the morale of Zinedine Zidane’s men who now will get into El Clasico next week with a six-point advantage.
