Slovakia will look to derail the hopes of World Champions Germany in the round of 16 in Euro 2016 when they play at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Sunday, June 26.

For the first time in many years, Germany started a tournament not as one of the favorites. However, they were not expected to have trouble in reaching the last-16 and they didn’t. Poland was the only challenge for them but a draw against them was enough for the Germans to confirm their top spot. But the challenge for Joachim Low will be to move above his insistence of a ‘false nine’ system and keep faith in striker Mario Gomez. Barring their lack of incisiveness in the final third, Germany do not carry any concerns.

France and Republic of Ireland will look to book their place in the last eight when they clash in the round of 16 this weekend. This match will be played at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, June 26.

France as hosts will have extra pressure to perform but this is a supremely talented side that has managed to live up to expectations so far in the tournament. Topping the group containing Romania, Albania and Switzerland is not a huge achievement but France were clinical through all their matches. It required flashes of brilliance and some last minute goals for France to achieve this, but they completely deserved their place in the knockouts. The real test awaits them from now on and with all big names stacked in the same draw, France should be at their best to move further.

Euro 2016

Croatia and Portugal played one of the drab encounters of Euro 2016 in their round of 16 clash which was settled by a dramatic winner from Ricardo Quaresma. The goal was enough for Portugal to pip Croatia 1-0 for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Croatia were one of the standout performers of the league stage and Portugal had qualified after a 3-3 draw with Hungary. As such there were hopes that this game would also be electric and high-scoring. But all those hopes were dashed as both sides played pedestrian with not many opportunities to talk about. Croatia mastered the midfield as expected with Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic running the show. Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic threatened with their runs but the game was overall a dull affair.

Euro 2016

In a clash of two British sides vying to make their first entry to the quarter finals, Wales came out on top edging their neighbors Northern Ireland 1-0 in a tight encounter. This Euro 2016 round of 16 match did not have many goals or great action but the tense affair was a treat to watch.

All the pre-match talk was centered around the Welsh superstar Gareth Bale who was expected to do the star turn for Chris Coleman’s side. But, he was put under check by the Northern Irish who did a great job in stifling him and the creative midfield of Wales. Chances were few and far between and it looked like going into extra time to find a winner. But Bale showed his class by sending a teasing cross into the box which was put into the Irish goal by their defender Gareth McAuley.

Poland win 5-4 on penalties

Euro 2016

Adam Nawalka’s Poland side created history by reaching their first continental quarter-finals. They survived nervous moments before finishing 1-1 in regular time and then overcoming Switzerland 5-4 via penalty shootout in the round of 16 of Euro 2016.

Jakub Blaszczykowski's strike in the 39th minute gave Poland the lead in what was another subdued performance from their talisman Robert Lewandowski. But the Poles made the mistake of sitting back and trying to protect the lead which was exploited by the Swiss eventually resulting in an equalizer. The equalizing goal from Xherdan Shaqiri is a definite contender for the goal of the tournament. The reverse overhead strike was enough to bring momentum to the Swiss as the match meandered into extra time.

Wales have put in strong performances in Euros 2016 so far and will look to dish more of the same when they clash with Northern Ireland for a place in the quarter-finals. This encounter will be played at Parc des Princes in Paris on Saturday, June 25.

With Gareth Bale in its ranks, the Chris Coleman managed Wales was one of the underdogs. Paired with England, Russia and Slovakia in Group B, Wales managed to top the group. A defeat to England to a last-gasp goal by Daniel Sturridge was the only blip in their performance so far. The midfield duo of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey have been in scintillating form so far giving them hopes of further progress.
